What are the precautions when selecting the end mill?

In order to extend the life of the die, the hardness of the material to be cut also tends to increase. Therefore, higher demands are made on the tool life and processing efficiency in high-speed machining of high-hardness materials. Under normal circumstances, we can choose the type of end mill from three points:

1, according to the type of workpiece and hardness to select the type of tool coating. When processing workpieces with hardness below HRC40 such as carbon steel, Mitsubishi Materials's MIRACLE40 coating can be used. When processing alloy steel S, tool steel, and other workpieces with hardness around HRC50, MIRACLE coating can be used. In the processing of higher hardness workpieces, the tool profile, carbide material, and coating are all selected for the high hardness MIRACLE coating for high hardness materials.

2, according to the shape of the workpiece to choose the end mill cutter neck shape. The shape of the cutter neck of the end mill can be divided into standard type, long neck type and conical neck type, which can be selected according to the depth and shape of the workpiece. Long-neck type and cone-neck type can be deep-cut, and the interference angle should be considered when choosing between the two. At the same time, compared with the long-neck type, the cone-neck type end mill has a high rigidity, can improve cutting conditions, and achieve better machining accuracy. The cone-neck type end mill should be selected as far as possible.

3. According to the machining accuracy, choose the end mill with different ball head accuracy. The arc accuracy of the end mill is usually ±10μm, but there are also ±5μm high-precision end mills that can be used for high-precision machining.
