Foreword In recent years, the rapid development of China's paper industry has driven the continuous growth of the consumption of paper mineral powder materials. The main non-ore powder materials such as calcium carbonate, talcum powder, and kaolin have become important and indispensable raw materials for the modern paper industry. The retention of the mineral powder material as a papermaking filler has a great influence on the quality function of the paper, and the particle size and the particle size distribution of the mineral raw material are important factors affecting the filler retention. Effect of Filler Particle Size on Paper Production The fillers in the paper industry today are mainly based on mineral powders such as ground calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin and titanium dioxide. There are many factors that affect the retention of these fillers in the papermaking process. Practice has proved that in addition to papermaking process control factors such as the type of pulp, application of additives and paper machine operating parameters, the size, microscopic shape and particle size distribution of filler particles have a great influence on the retention rate in the papermaking process. Adding fillers during the paper manufacturing process can cause linting and dusting during rewinding, slitting, and printing. The irrational distribution of particle size and particle size of the filler is one of the important factors that cause hair loss. In addition, when the filler micro-topography is basically the same, the filler with a narrow particle size distribution is advantageous for retention during papermaking. Tests have shown that different fillers with the same microscopic appearance and the same average particle size are consistent under the condition that the ash content of the paper is consistent and various physical indexes of the finished paper, such as the quantitative, whiteness, secondary growth rate, and tensile strength, meet the requirements. The retention rate of filler with narrow particle size distribution has been significantly improved. The following is a comparison of data on the dynamic addition of different fillers when the quality of the paper meets the requirements in the test (Table 1). When all the indexes are in agreement, No. 1 filler (synthetic light calcium carbonate) has a more ideal particle size distribution. Due to the increase in retention rate, the amount of No. 1 filler (synthetic light calcium carbonate) is reduced by about 1/4 compared with No. 2 filler. The use of fillers with a narrow particle size distribution as paper fillers can increase retention, reduce the paper copy cost, and appropriately reduce papermaking wastewater treatment loads.
