Solvay announced on June 11 that its Thai subsidiary Vinythai will construct a new epichlorohydrin plant in Taixing City to meet the growing market demand in China. The plant will initially build a 100,000-ton/year epichlorohydrin plant and plans to invest 155 million euros. It will be put into operation in the second half of 2014. The new plant will use Solvay's proprietary bio-based Epicerol technology, which uses natural glycerol, a by-product of biofuel production. Compared with the traditional propylene technology route, CO2 emissions have dropped by 60%. Solvay stated that China's epichlorohydrin market is expected to grow by 8% per year and will account for 35% of global demand in 2016. The completion of the Taixing plant will make Vinythai the second largest epichlorohydrin producer in Asia.
